Book review: How to Buy a Planet
A ‘Save the planet’ SciFi adventure, which will almost certainly be liked by people who can appreciate the more absurdist end of the genre, like the stories from Douglas Adams. It’s Holdsworth debut novel, and even though it somethimes shows through, it’s absolutely not a bad read at all.
The short gist of it: All the world’s debt has become unmanageable, and the world leaders think they have found a solution to the problem: They sold the planet to aliens, cancelling out all debt on the planet. Of course, things soon turned out not to be as peachy as they seem.
Personally, my biggest gripe was with the moralistic finger-wagging that takes the upper hand in the last part of the book. Had that been left out, I would have liked it even more. Besides that, the ‘wrapping up’ part feels a bit cut short and forced, and not as well thought out as the rest of the book, as if the writer was working towards a page-limit and only has so much space to wrap it all up.
That being said, quite a nice debut, and certeinly worth the read. At the time of writing, the Kindle edition sells for just €2,99, which really is a steal.
